About Our Organization

For children who face the overwhelming odds of a serious medical condition, the bad times can be truly devastating. Make-A-Wish® exists to remind kids of all the amazing possibilities of life and to help them through the most difficult parts of their journey.

We create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. We are on a quest to bring every eligible child's wish to life, because a wish is an integral part of a child's treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. We're the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organization, serving children in every community in the United States and in 50 countries worldwide. Together, generous donors, supporters, staff and 33,000 volunteers across the U.S., grant a wish every 34 minutes, on average, somewhere in the country. Since 1980, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 285,000 wishes to children in the U.S. and its territories; more than 15,300 in 2016 alone.

In February of 1985, Dr. Jerry Clark and his wife watched a touching story on TV about a young boy with cancer. The national Make-A-Wish Foundation had heard about the boy’s wish to meet Mr. T. – and they made it happen. Inspired by the wonderful way Mr. T. treated this boy; Dr. Clark turned to his wife and said, “We need to start something like this in North Carolina.”

Dr. Clark enlisted the help of his brothers at the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club. Committed to helping children, they embraced the idea of starting the chapter and worked diligently to get it up and running. Not only did they host an annual golf tournament to benefit Make-A-Wish, for the first 10 years the club committed 100% of all funds raised to granting wishes, covering all administrative expenses themselves.

In 1985, the chapter’s first wish child asked to meet his football hero, Miami Dolphins quarterback, Dan Marino. Since its inception, the chapter and its supporters have granted more than 4,350 wishes to children in Central and Western North Carolina.

The chapter covers 51 counties in North Carolina from the county of Alamance to the west. Every local child's wish is made possible by special individuals, corporations, volunteers, student organizations and foundations in our community. Thanks to local support, we will grant over 360 wishes in 2018 at an average cost of $6,000 per wish.

Donations can be made to Make-A-Wish® Central & Western North Carolina, 1131 Harding Place, Charlotte, NC 28204. For more information about Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina visit or call us at 1-877-677-9474 and discover how you can Share the Power of a Wish®.
